With less than 24 hours to Saturday's 2013 African Cup of Nations AFCON final qualifier between Nigeria's Super Eagles and Lone Star in Monrovia, Liberians are beckoning on the gods of Nimba, Grand Gedeh, Sinoe, Bassa and the rest of the fifteen divisional counties to wake up and aid their passage to next year's Africa's soccer fiesta in South Africa.
According to reports coming out of the West African nation Thursday, the encounter slated for Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex on September 8, is a must-win for the Coach Kaetu Smith's lads.
According to a release from Liberia, "It is a game Liberia should not lose and it is a game that Super Eagles will fight to overcome. Hence the appeal to the gods, while the national heroes, fresh from silencing many of our critics against the Malawian Flames, are getting ready for the battle royale that even the stars in heaven may obey their lone star and overwhelm the eagles who reside in it."
Going down memory lane, Liberians believe the bookmakers favour the Lone Star to triumph over the Eagles during the match.
"But if history is something to go by, then of course Liberia holds some element of superiority over the Super Eagles, having defeated them 2 -1 at home in 2011.
"And let no soccer fan be intimidated over the population of Nigeria, or a number of professionals coming for Nigeria. After all only a combined number of 22 players will decide who is prepared to cruise to the next stage.
"The pride of the nation is now at stake, and the players should be told in no uncertain terms that they are at the crossroad to the 2013 AFCON.
"The only thing that could prevent them from appearing in the finals of the nations' cup is any mishap against the Super Eagles. They should be reminded that Saturday's battle is, like I said in a previous article, the Game of Death, (apologies to the late Bruce Lee).
"As we await Saturday September 8's crucial first-leg encounter, we appeal to the gods of all the counties to assemble and help our heroes secure victory over the Super Eagles so that together we can all sing, All Hail Liberia Hail," a release on Liberian football official website read in part.
