Nigeria Can Learn From American Election

The United States of America presidential elections once again, brought the world to the realization that America has got something to teach the world in this era of democratization. One thing that particularly struck me was the passion that drove both candidates to serve their nation. That may not be the situation in all nations especially Nigeria but there is need to turn a new leaf to make democratic progress. Politics from the American perspective as far as I am concerned, means ‘put national interest above personal selfish political cravings’. That is the spirit...I wish our 'politicians' will learn how to play people centered politics and forget their selfish political cravings. We really need to wake up in our country Nigeria if we must make democratic

 progress. Our politics needs overhaul honestly. See how Nigerians invested their emotions in the American election when 'I don't care' is the veiled norm when it comes to ours. If we think we will prove acceptable to others when we have not proven acceptable to ourselves, we are just day-dreaming. We must wake up and soberly reflect on our ways and make amends to get it right in Nigeria. We must make the sacrifice of playing politics by the rule and not recourse to violence when we suffer electoral defeat. Americans made sacrifice to get where they are now, we can’t get close if we refrain from making the needed sacrifice to build our democracy and nation. God bless Nigeria.
